BOBBY LABONTE GAINS ONE POSITION IN POINTS STANDING AFTER 22ND-PLACE FINISH AT ATLANTA
Atlanta – An exciting conclusion to the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, that featured two attempts at a green-white-checkered finish, brought Bobby Labonte and the No. 71 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet a 22nd-place finish. This moves the team up one spot to 30th in the points standings.
The TRG Motorsports team began the race in 21st position, and ran as high as 15th in the 341-lap race. The high banks and fast speeds that have made Atlanta a popular track with many drivers caused Labonte to fight loose conditions for much of the day, and kept the pit crew busy with adjustments to make the car easier to handle.
“The TaxSlayer.com Chevy was definitely fast today, we just couldn’t quite get the handling that we needed so that I could really contend with the leaders,” Labonte said. “The guys were working hard on pit road to make all of the changes Doug (Randolph) was calling for and I’m really glad we were able to avoid some of those big wrecks at the end.”
Team owner Kevin Buckler had returned to Atlanta after a one-day visit to Homestead, Fla., in support of TRG’s multi-car entry in to the Grand Prix of Miami Grand-Am Rolex race, to help Labonte and his Cup team battle it out on the 1.54-mile oval.
“Everyone contributed to a good solid finish today and we slew some really strong teams. Bobby did a fantastic job keeping it out of trouble and maintaining fast lap times and we have to thanks our friends at TaxSlayer.com for jumping on board with us for this race. They are a great company and fantastic partners,” Buckler said. “We’ll take this off-weekend to regroup, and prepare to bring the TaxSlayer.com Chevy to the short track at Bristol.”
The 71 team will enjoy its first weekend off since the beginning of February and return to one the fans’ favorite tracks, Bristol Motor Speedway, on March 21. The race will be broadcast live on FOX with coverage beginning at 1:00 Eastern time.
